Lottery determines 5th CD ballot position for April 7 election
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, March 04, 2009
The "Democrat" card was selected first by Cook County Clerk David Orr on Wednesday during a ballot position lottery to determine the order of the three established parties in the 5th Congressional District contest.
At 2 p.m., Orr and Director of Elections Jan Kralovec stuffed note cards into pill bottles, which were then tossed into a fish bowl. Orr selected the first bottle and unfolded the card with "Democrat" written upon it.
The drawing determined that the Green Party candidate will be second on the ballot, followed by the Republican nominee.
Orr explained the ballot order -- Democrat, Green, Republican -- will apply to Chicago and suburban Cook County ballots. A lottery is conducted prior to each General Election to determine the order in which the major political parties will appear on the ballot.
