Candidate filing starts Monday, Oct. 26

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Several hundred Cook County candidates seeking office in the February 2, 2010 Primary Election will have their first opportunity to file nominating petitions at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 26.

"The building opens at 6 a.m. and we expect a crowd," said Cook County Clerk David Orr, whose office accepts the filings.

Only candidates running for a county office will submit their paperwork to the Clerk's office, which includes candidates for: County Board President, Clerk, Treasurer, Sheriff, Assessor, County Commissioner (Districts 1-17), Board of Review Member (District 1), Water Reclamation District Commissioner (3 seats), Regional Superintendent of Schools and Township Committeemen.

All other candidates will file with the State Board of Elections in Springfield.

Candidates or their representatives can file nominating papers beginning at 9 a.m. in the lower level (Pedway) of the Cook County Administration Building, 69 W. Washington, Chicago. People can start lining up outside the Clerk's Pedway Room at 6 a.m.

All candidates in line by 9 a.m., when the Clerk's office opens, will have their papers stamped with that time. If there are multiple candidates seeking the same office who file simultaneously, a lottery will be conducted to determine the order their names will appear on the ballot. The lottery will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 9 in the Clerk's office lobby, 69 W. Washington, Fifth Floor, Chicago.

Candidates must file their nomination papers between Oct. 26 and Nov. 2. The Clerk's office will accept filings Oct. 27-30 and Nov. 2 during regular business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Objections to a candidate's nominating petitions can be filed until 5 p.m. on Nov. 9 for county candidates and until 5 p.m. on Nov. 13 for township committeeman candidates.
